he RAIC is saddened to announce the passing of Christopher Thomas Fillingham FRAIC, on September 19, 2021. Christopher was a passionate supporter of the profession and proponent of developing lasting building regulations and procedures in Canada. From his professional practice to his contributions as a Past-President and Fellow of the RAIC, Christopher will be dearly missed.

The RAIC invites you to join us for a special practice resource webinar on professionalism and allyship for LGBTQ+ identities. This webinar will introduce the relevance and importance of embracing gender and sexual diversity in the workplace and beyond. Topics will include differentiating between sex, gender, and sexual orientation, changes in terminology and language, defining identities, and how to be an ally while maintaining professionalism.

The ²©²Ê (RAIC) is pleased to be accepting submissions for the 2022 RAIC International Prize. The Prize, awarded every two years, celebrates architecture that is judged to be transformative within its societal context and emblematic of the human values of respect and inclusiveness.

Architects, teams of architects, and architect-led collaborations are invited to submit a building or a related group of buildings that has been completed, occupied and in use for at least two years prior to the entry deadline. The deadline for receipt of submissions for the 2022 RAIC International Prize is December 3, 2021.

The RAIC International Prize Scholarships are awarded in conjunction with the RAIC International Prize and will be presented at the 2022 Conference on Architecture in Vancouver, BC.  

The RAIC International Prize Scholarships are open to students registered in a Canadian architecture program at any point in the period between the submission deadline for the previous cycle of the RAIC International Prize Scholarships and the submission deadline of the current cycle.  

The deadline for submissions is January 14, 2022.  

Up to three scholarships, each in the amount of CAD 5,000, will be awarded to the selected winners.  

Nominate your colleagues and peers for Fellowship in the RAIC. The College of Fellows formally recognizes members and distinguished laypersons who have made outstanding contributions to the profession in design, scholarship, or service to the profession or the community.

NEW – Nominations for Honorary Fellowship 

An Honorary Fellow of the RAIC College is an Honorary Member of the RAIC who has achieved international professional eminence or has rendered distinctive service to the profession or to the community at large, nationally or internationally. Architects registered in Canada are not eligible for nomination. Nomination and advancement to Honorary Fellowship is administered by the RAIC College. Honorary Fellowship is bestowed for life and is one of the highest honours the RAIC can confer upon a Member. 

A Fellow of the Institute may nominate any individual for Honorary Fellowship of the RAIC College. Nominations require the support of at least two (2) Members as References. Honorary Fellowship will be considered for an international architect, or allied professional in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the built environment 

We now invite members of the RAIC to nominate an individual.

Deadline for nominations: November 5th, 2021.  All nominations must be submitted on RAIC’s online submission platform. 

The ²©²Ê (RAIC), the Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP), and the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects (CSLA) are pleased to announce that entries are now being accepted for the 2022 National Urban Design Awards (NUDA). 

 The deadline to submit online is December 17, 2021.  

 There are two ways to enter:  

•  Winners of the 2021 municipal Urban Design Awards are invited to submit to the National Urban Design Awards. There is no entry fee for municipal award winners, simply the requirement to submit the projects according to the prescribed format. 
• Projects in other communities across Canada are also eligible. Architects, planners, landscape architects, designers and students may apply directly to the National Urban Design Awards program.

Deepthi has a degree in Business Administration and has worked in accounting and finance for GlassHouse Systems, KPMG, Ernst & Young and a startup, Vipra Organics. She loves travelling to beaches and exploring places around the world.

The Mindful Modernism(s) project proposal is part of a larger, multi-phase, multi-year initiative between the Canadian Centre for Mindful Habitats (CCMH), the Department of Interior Design, Faculty of Architecture at the University of Manitoba, and the Bachelor of Interior Design program at Algonquin College to explore mindfulness in the teaching, practice, and pedagogy of the built environment. Mindful Modernism(s) is a webinar series with eight different sessions bringing together an international contingent of academics, scholars, and practitioners from North America, Asia, Australia, and Europe in a spirited debate about how to expand design thinking and practice to be more inclusive, tolerant, and respectful of marginalized perspectives, knowledge bases, and communities to generate and mobilize new knowledge areas and thinking strategies in the current design practice and pedagogy of the built environment.

Launched by Electric Autonomy Canada and sponsored by Parkland, Cadillac and CIBC, ‘The Electric Fuelling Station of the Future’ asks architects, designers and cross-disciplinary practitioners to reimagine the traditional refueling station as an entirely new roadside oasis for Electric Vehicles (EV’s), where travellers can rest, play, eat, recharge and more.

Here’s what the jury is looking for in a winning concept:

• INNOVATIVE CONCEPT: an innovative approach to the program brief that curates a new experience for EV drivers and their passengers, reinventing the traditional roadway pitstop, and transforming the dwell time into a positive experience.
• DESIGN: Guests should be treated to a novel, visually pleasing experience at every turn.
• SUSTAINABILITY: Proposed concepts should prioritize sustainable materials and building techniques. We are looking for a positive energy strategy that reduces carbon and is implementable today.
• FEASIBILITY: Design concepts should be feasible, taking into account weather, should there be interest in commissioning a project. No levitating car parks please!

The top three designs will be awarded with cash prizes: First prize: $25,000; Second prize: $10,000; and Third prize: $5,000
